Review: Farmhouse Kings Cross, Rushcutters Bay

A seasonal set menu worth seeking out

Farmhouse Kings Cross offers a set menu that evolves roughly every four weeks to reflect the changing seasons. The cuisine falls under the broad umbrella of ‘Modern Australian,’ with a distinctly European flair that overshadows Asian influences. The French-leaning wine list reinforces this European emphasis, though patriotic diners can opt for Australian selections as well.

Food and wine

I’m delighted to say we thoroughly enjoyed the food.

The family-style plating is particularly well-suited for groups of four to six, giving everyone a chance to indulge in their favourite dishes. Portions are generous, ensuring you leave satisfied rather than hungry.

The pacing of the courses was also spot on—you won’t find yourself anxiously checking the time between dishes.

We didn’t opt for the wine pairing and instead ordered by the bottle. As mentioned, the wine list offered a broad range and we enjoyed everything we had to drink.

Service and environment

Our waiter provided excellent service throughout, demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of the menu and offering thoughtful recommendations.

However, the outdoor seating left something to be desired. Bright exterior lights combined with dreary weather created a less-than-inviting atmosphere. Worse still, the table placement detracted significantly from our comfort.

Farmhouse is situated on a hill, and the outdoor tables align with the slope, causing them to tilt noticeably. This forces diners to sit at an awkward angle, which is particularly problematic for a set menu experience that encourages lingering over multiple courses. Comfort is key when seated for an extended period, and this issue detracts from the otherwise enjoyable experience.

Farmhouse – overall verdict

Despite the quibbles about outdoor seating, my party thoroughly enjoyed the food. Farmhouse excels at delivering a seasonal set menu experience at excellent value.

If the monthly menu intrigues you, I recommend a visit—just be sure to request an indoor table for a more comfortable dining experience.
