About Savour

Food and culture writing that hasn’t been paid for. Based in Australia, I write reviews of Sydney restaurants, cafes, bakeries and anything else that’s on.

Who is the author?

I am Max Eagles, a digital marketing professional based in Sydney.

Why did I start Savour?

I started this site for two reasons. Firstly, out of a shared frustration at trying to find great places to go and things to do. Secondly, I want to use my professional skills to work on something for myself.

There’s more content than ever, but you can’t trust any of it.

As the traditional media has declined, so has the coverage of soft subject matters like arts, food, culture broadly. There are major publications dedicated to these verticals that never seem to do more than republish media releases, never mind publishing original reporting or criticism.

The space has been filled to some extent by social media, with many TikTok and Instagrams impressions generated of viral foods. However, it’s tough to trust these, given the murky incentives to promote mediocrity while remaining silent on anything bad. Google Maps and Search aren’t much better, given that every competitor restaurant sits between a 4.0 and 4.4 rating, and anyone can pay for visibility.

Rather than compete with the noise, I want to publish longer-form impressions of places, including negative ones.

I have spent most of my career writing as others.

In my career across marketing, media, and communications, I have never written as myself. This is understandable – your employer isn’t paying you to promote yourself. I want this site to be then a personal outlet where I can write as Max.
