Review: Ada’s Affair, Glebe

Glebe’s new Ada’s Affair (144B Glebe Point Rd) is an exciting addition to the area’s specialty coffee scene.

Since moving to Glebe, I have made an effort to try a bunch of the local cafes.

Establishments like Dirty Red and the Wedge put a lot of effort into their coffee, but the spaces feel designed for a sit-down breakfast or lunch rather than a takeaway coffee with a quick bite to eat.

What’s the coffee like at Ada’s Affair?

Ada’s Affair is in contrast a more casual affair. Occupying a small space next to a laundromat, the cafe has few tables, a standing bar(always appreciated) and a bench on the street. The Sample Coffee bags are on display. The natural light from the street and the skylight give everything an airy feel.

I’ve been to Ada’s several times now, trying milk-based, black and filter drinks. Everytime the staff have been incredibly warm, helpful when asking for recommendations, and attentive throughout our experience.

The cappuccino presentation was immaculate, and the milk was perfectly cut through with the house espresso.

The single origin batch brew had an enjoyable balance of sweetness and acidity. I later bought some beans to recreate the taste for my weekday morning brews.

The espresso was equally delicious. My only minor gripe was the cup size – I’d prefer something smaller for better heat retention and overall presentation.

Indonesian influence

The cafe’s Indonesian influence is prominent throughout – I tried a STMJ that was on offer, a warm energy drink made of susu (milk), telur (egg), madu (honey), and jahe (ginger). While I won’t be swapping coffee for it, I appreciated the opportunity to try something rarely offered.

The matcha verdict

Lucy had a matcha latte with full cream milk, sweetened with honey. She says the sweetness complimented the matcha. It’s not super strong like a Japanese-style serving, but it’s more akin to an Australian chai latte. She says she prefers the coffee overall but when not in the mood would comfortably order the matcha again.

Final thoughts and Ada’s Affair ratings

The cafe does have an onsite kitchen and hot food menu, so I plan to try that within the next weeks. I’d also like to check out the original Ada’s Affair in Darlinghurst.

As it stands, I am confident in recommending Ada’s Affair as the best cafe north of Glebe Markets and easily among one of the best in the Glebe and Forest Lodge areas.
